Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society presents: Corey Malcolm
Through careful historical analysis, Corey Malcom has been able to uncover
mysterious information from a slave ship letter from 1819; specifically, the name
of the ship, the letter's writer and receiver, and learn many details of the voyage.
Surprisingly, the study of the letter exposed the active involvement of Pardon C.
Greene in the African slave trade, shortly before he was to become one of Key
West's founding fathers. From the hints of a few cryptic paragraphs, a fascinating
view into the circumstances of an illegal slaving voyage is revealed. Starts at 7 p.
m. at Monroe County Public Library, Auditorium. Free admission.

Anglers target tarpon, permit and bonefish to compete to achieve a “flats grand
slam.” Celebrity participants have included Major League Baseball Hall of Famer
Wade Boggs, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays; NASA space shuttle
astronaut Bruce Melnick; former Denver Broncos football player Mark Cooper and
saxophone superstar Clarence Clemons. The $3,500 team entry fee includes two
days of guided fishing with a celebrity.

Goombay Fantasy Fest World Famous Street Festival
The rich Caribbean tradition that flavors Key West’s culture is to be celebrated
during the 31st annual Goombay Festival. The exuberant street party showcases
island arts and crafts, music and food in the heart of Key West’s historic Bahama
Village neighborhood. Goombay weekend marks the beginning of Fantasy Fest,
the island city’s masking and costuming gala scheduled Oct. 21-30.

Lionfish Derby for Divers
Teams of up to four divers compete for more than $3,300 in cash and prizes in the
final of three 2011 lionfish derbies. Derby divers who successfully remove invasive
lionfish from sanctuary waters can win for most, largest and smallest lionfish. The
Lower Keys derby is held Hurricane Hole Marina, Key West. Visit REEF website to
